Richmond Surgical Arts now has a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, in a private room at the Stony Point Parkway office. Surgical patients can add sessions to their recovery, and anyone can book a session.
What hyperbaric oxygen therapy does
Inside the chamber, air pressure rises above normal sea-level pressure while you breathe concentrated oxygen. At higher pressure, more oxygen dissolves into your blood and reaches tissue throughout your body, including tissue that is healing.
Why people book sessions
- Healing after surgery. Healing tissue needs oxygen to repair. Sessions deliver more of it in the weeks after a procedure.
- Swelling and bruising. Added oxygen supports your body as swelling goes down and bruising fades.
- Skin. Your body uses oxygen to build collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm. Sessions pair with skin treatments and surgery.
- Energy, focus and sleep. A session is quiet, reclined rest while you breathe concentrated oxygen.
- Workout recovery. Muscles repair with oxygen after hard training.
What a session is like
Sessions run 60 or 90 minutes. You sit in a reclining chair inside a soft-sided chamber with wide windows. As pressure rises, your ears feel full, like air travel, and swallowing or yawning clears them. Then you rest, read or work. Phones and laptops are welcome if they are charged, since charging cords stay outside the chamber.
For surgical patients
If you are having surgery with Dr. Lynam, ask about adding hyperbaric sessions to your recovery. Dr. Lynam decides at your post-op visit when sessions fit your healing. Sessions add to your post-op care. They do not replace your post-op instructions or follow-up visits.
The honest part
The chamber at Richmond Surgical Arts is a mild hyperbaric chamber. It runs at lower pressure than hospital chambers, which treat medical conditions such as decompression sickness and carbon monoxide poisoning. The use of mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is controversial and experimental for some conditions, and sessions at Richmond Surgical Arts are a wellness service, not a treatment for disease.
