If your skin has started to feel a little looser than it used to, or you keep noticing texture and fine lines that creams just aren’t touching, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common things patients bring up at our Richmond practice. The good news is that you don’t always need surgery to see a real difference.
That’s where Potenza comes in. It’s a radiofrequency microneedling device, and we’ve brought it in as the next step up from our older microneedling technology. The idea is simple even if the science behind it isn’t: tiny needles plus heat, working together to wake up your skin’s own collagen. Most patients are in and out in under an hour, and there’s no big recovery to plan your life around.
What Potenza actually is
Potenza is a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling system made by Jeisys Medical. It’s FDA cleared for use in dermatologic and general surgical procedures for electrocoagulation and hemostasis. In plain terms, it’s a treatment that combines two things that each work on their own, then puts them together.
First, the microneedling part. Very fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. Your body reads those as something to repair, so it kicks off its natural healing response and starts laying down fresh collagen and elastin. Microneedling on its own has been doing this for years.
Second, the radiofrequency part. As the needles reach the right depth, they deliver RF energy directly into the deeper layers of skin. That heat does something needles alone can’t: it gently contracts existing collagen and pushes the body to build more over time. So you get the surface renewal from the needles and the deeper firming from the heat, in one go.
Treatment use cases
One of the reasons we like Potenza is how adaptable it is. By adjusting needle depth and energy, we can treat different concerns on different parts of the face and body, sometimes in the same session. Here’s where patients tend to find it useful.
Acne scars and textural irregularities. This is one of the more common reasons people ask about RF microneedling. The combination of micro-injury and deep heat can help soften the look of indented or uneven scarring over a series of treatments. It tends to work gradually, and stubborn scars sometimes need to be paired with other approaches, which is something we’ll talk through honestly at your consultation.
Fine lines and wrinkles. Areas like the cheeks, around the mouth, and the forehead often respond well. The delicate skin around the eyes can be treated too, with the right settings, which is an area where some other devices have safety limits.
Skin laxity and early sagging. If you’re noticing softening along the jawline, lower face, or neck, the RF energy is aimed at that deeper firming. It’s not a replacement for a facelift, and we won’t pretend it is, but for mild to moderate laxity it can be a real option without surgery.
Pores and overall skin tone. Enlarged pores and a dull or uneven surface are common complaints, and many patients see their skin look smoother and more even as collagen rebuilds.
Beyond the face. Because the energy depth is adjustable, Potenza isn’t limited to facial skin. It can be used in other areas where people want firmer, smoother skin. We’ll figure out what’s appropriate for you during the evaluation.
A quick reality check on all of this: every concern above responds differently from person to person, and almost everything works better as a short series than as a one-off. What’s realistic for your skin is really a conversation to have with one of our skincare experts.
Does science back it up?
It does, with the usual caveats that come with aesthetics research. RF microneedling works by combining mechanical micro-injury with thermal energy to drive collagen remodeling in the dermis, which is the mechanism most reviews point to. A 2024 review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum noted that adding radiofrequency to traditional microneedling appears to improve both safety and results over time (read it here).
A separate clinical study using microneedle fractional RF found measurable increases in dermal thickness and collagen content, along with smaller pores, in patients treated over several sessions (see the study on PubMed). That said, a lot of the research is still made up of smaller studies, so think of these as encouraging rather than guarantees. Dr. Lynam can walk you through what the evidence does and doesn’t promise.
What a session is like
We start by numbing the area with a topical anesthetic, so most people find the treatment very manageable. Once you’re comfortable, the Potenza handpiece is passed over the treatment area, delivering the needles and RF energy together. A full session usually runs somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes depending on how much area we’re covering.
Afterward your skin will likely look a little red and feel warm, kind of like a mild sunburn. That’s normal and usually settles within a day or two. Most patients head right back to their regular routine, though we’ll give you specific aftercare instructions to follow (sun protection being a big one).
Why Potenza is recommended as a series of treatments
Potenza RF microneedling is typically recommended as a series of 3 sessions spaced approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart to stimulate the deep, multi-layered collagen and elastin production necessary for optimal, long-lasting results. While a single treatment initiates the skin’s healing response and collagen remodeling process, additional sessions are needed to progressively build stronger collagen scaffolding within the skin. Completing the recommended series allows for more significant improvement in skin texture, acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more rejuvenated skin over time.
Things to know before you book
Like any medical treatment, Potenza has some considerations. Temporary redness, swelling, and mild sensitivity are common in the first few days. Less commonly, there can be minor bruising or pinpoint marks where the needles entered. It’s not the right fit for everyone, certain skin conditions, active infections, or some medications may mean we recommend a different approach.
This is exactly what the consultation is for. We will look at your skin, go over your goals and your history, and give you an honest read on whether Potenza makes sense for you or whether something else would serve you better.
