Risks & Safety

An Honest Look at the Risks

A facelift is real surgery, and being honest about that is part of doing it well. The good news: in the hands of a properly trained surgeon, in an accredited facility, a deep plane facelift has a strong safety record and serious complications are uncommon. Here’s the straight version: the risks, and how they’re minimized.

The Risks to Understand

Every surgery carries general risks: reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, infection, and delayed healing. Facelift-specific risks include the following.

Hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin) is the most common facelift complication, usually early and treatable. It’s the reason activity and blood pressure are limited right after surgery.

Nerve irritation means temporary numbness or weakness as sensory and motor nerves recover; lasting nerve injury is uncommon. Deep plane technique is performed in a defined plane specifically to protect the facial nerve.

Scarring varies by person. Incisions are placed in natural creases and the hairline to stay discreet.

Skin healing issues are more likely in smokers, which is why smoking must stop before and after.

Asymmetry or a result that needs revision is uncommon, and discussed honestly in consultation.

How Risk Is Minimized

A Board-Certified Surgeon

Deep plane work demands deep anatomical knowledge. Dr. Lynam’s dual dental and medical background with maxillofacial training is exactly that expertise. Read more about his training.

An Accredited Surgery Center

Surgery is performed at Stony Point Surgery Center, an accredited outpatient facility, not a back-office room.

Honest Candidacy Screening

Health history, medications, and smoking status are reviewed up front. The safest facelift is the one done on a well-screened candidate.

Clear Aftercare

Following recovery instructions (rest, elevation, no smoking, activity limits) measurably lowers complication risk. See the full recovery timeline.

The Honest Bottom Line

Complications are uncommon and most are minor and treatable, but they’re not zero, and any surgeon who promises zero risk isn’t being straight with you. The right way to weigh it is a candid consultation: your health, your goals, and a realistic picture of both the result and the risk.

Facelift Videos

A little over a year ago I decided I wanted me back! I researched doctors and chose Dr. Lynam to do a facelift. I obviously had faith in him, I let him operate on my face! But, that was not all! He did such a fantastic, amazing job, I got a breast reduction in June 2013 to help with the neck and back pain I had suffered for years. To my surprise I actually could breathe better.
