Neck Lift

Two Different Necks, Two Different Procedures

“I hate my neck” is one of the most common things patients say, and it can mean two completely different problems. Telling them apart is the whole job, because they’re corrected differently.

Individual results vary.

The Full Neck

Heaviness under the chin and along the jawline, a softened or blurred angle between chin and neck, sometimes a “double” contour. This is largely an accumulation pattern: fullness that needs contouring.

The plan usually centers on removing and refining that fullness so the jawline and neck angle re-emerge. In the right candidate, submental liposuction of the neck alone can do a lot; more often it’s combined with deeper work for a lasting contour.

The Lax Neck

Loose, crepey skin and vertical bands running down the front of the neck. These bands are the edges of the platysma muscle, which has separated and slackened with time.

Removing fat here won’t help and can make things look worse. A lax neck needs the platysma muscle repositioned and tightened and the skin re-draped, which is deep-layer work, not contouring.

Neck and Face Are One Result

The platysma in the neck is continuous with the SMAS in the face, one structural sheet. That’s why a facelift and neck lift are so often done together: addressing the face while leaving a heavy or banded neck breaks the harmony the eye reads instantly. The deep plane facelift works on that continuous layer, so the jawline and neck are restored as part of one balanced result rather than a separate operation.

Most necks are a mix of fullness and laxity, in different proportions. Which is why the plan is built after reading your neck, not from a menu. See How Your Face Ages for more on accumulation versus depletion.

What to Expect

Neck work is generally performed at the same time as a facelift, at the accredited Stony Point Surgery Center, on an outpatient basis. Recovery tracks closely with the facelift timeline: most swelling and bruising settle over the first two weeks, with the final contour continuing to refine over months. Details are on the recovery page, and the honest risk picture is on risks and safety.

Facelift with Dr. Lynam

A little over a year ago I decided I wanted me back! I researched doctors and chose Dr. Lynam to do a facelift. I obviously had faith in him, I let him operate on my face! But, that was not all! He did such a fantastic, amazing job, I got a breast reduction in June 2013 to help with the neck and back pain I had suffered for years. To my surprise I actually could breathe better.
