As we age, there may be a loss of volume in your lips, or you may have been born with thinner lips and now desire enhancement or augmentation to create a desired look to improve your image and self-esteem.
The Lip Enhancement Procedure
Lip enhancement, or augmentation, procedure is performed using a number of materials from fat grafting to Juvéderm® to enhance the volume of your lips. With fat grafting, fat is harvested from the hip or thigh region and then spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the cells. Through a very small needle, it is implanted in the desired area of the lips. Overcorrection is usually performed due to the knowledge that not all fat that is injected survives. How much fat survives can vary from none to 100%. The key in fat transfer is to use small amounts of fat combined with proper placement. Since fat grafts may not live, it is usual for the procedure to take up to 2 – 3 treatments to achieve your desired result. This is done in the office under local anesthesia and takes 45 minutes to perform.
Juvéderm® Ultra and Restylane Silk are injectable smooth gel fillers that can be injected under your skin to instantly smooth and enhance your lips. The injection is slightly painful, but no more than a normal shot. Topical anesthetic is placed on the area to help to numb the injection site. This procedure is done in the office and takes 30 minutes to perform.
After Enhancement
After Juvéderm® and Restylane Silk injections, you may have some swelling and redness and bruising. This will subside in a few days. You may return to your normal activities the same day. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for either procedure is to schedule a consultation. You will learn about reasonable goals and expectations for the procedure.
