As we age, lips become less voluminous and lose their shape and wrinkles and fine lines start to surround the lip. Some people naturally have lips that are lacking in volume and aren’t shapely, so the aging process has an even bigger impact on the appearance of their lips.
The lips are one of the most noticeable features on the face and tend to be focused on by others when you’re speaking or smiling.
Lip enhancements can provide prominent or subtle changes that can alter the appearance of your face overall and give you a more youthful look.
If you are particularly self-conscious about the size and shape of your lips and find that it prevents you from feeling comfortable at social events or stops you from having your photo taken, a lip enhancement could be the treatment for you.
What is a lip enhancement?
A lip enhancement, also known as a lip augmentation, is a cosmetic procedure that is used to add volume to and reshape the lips.
It is usually performed under local anesthetic and can provide a temporary or permanent solution to lips lacking in volume.
What are the different types of lip augmentation?
There are four different types of lip enhancement that each provide different results.
-
- Fat Transfer Augmentation
During this type of augmentation, a small amount of fat is taken from the thigh or hip. The fat is then placed into a centrifuge that spins it rapidly to improve the concentration of the cells. Once concentrated, the fat is injected into the chosen areas of the lip.
This is a completely natural procedure because no chemicals are used, however, the procedure usually needs to be performed 2-3 times to achieve the desired result.

- Injectable Fillers
Fillers are the most common type of lip enhancement and involve injecting a substance such as Juvederm or Botox into the areas of the lip that need plumping. The results are visible immediately and last for up to 6 months.

- Lip Lift
If the distance between the top of your lip and the base of your nose is a little longer than you’d like, a lip lift can be carried out. This involves a small incision being made at the base of the nose and excess tissue being removed. The incision is then sutured.
This causes the top lip to lift up giving it a fuller and shapelier appearance.
- Lip Lift
- Lip Implants
A silicone implant is inserted into the center of the lips through 2 minor incisions made at the corners of the mouth. Lip implants offer permanent results.
What are the benefits?
Having a lip enhancement comes with its own benefits. You have complete control over the areas of your lips that you’d like enhancing and how voluminous you’d like them to be. Furthermore, some people even feel more attractive after they have undergone a lip enhancement.
Having fuller lips can also help to reverse the signs of aging by smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines surrounding the lip and subtle changes to your lips can make a big difference to the overall appearance of your face.
Finally, if the size and shape of your lips has been the cause of any insecurities, having a lip enhancement can improve your confidence and self-esteem and make you feel more comfortable about being in front of a camera.
